SOA-C03 LEARNING PATH

Learn the work behind the certification.

The SOA-C03 path is about operating a workload after it goes live: collecting a useful signal, finding the failing layer, making a controlled change and proving service recovery. This independent outline connects the five official domains to operational evidence you can discuss with an instructor or practise in an authorized sandbox.

Who this is for: For cloud operators, systems administrators and support engineers who deploy, monitor, troubleshoot and recover AWS workloads. AWS describes a target candidate with roughly one year of AWS operations experience and related operations work.

Before you start: Be comfortable with basic networking, an operating system, AWS account and IAM concepts, and the AWS CLI. If these are new, begin with the Cloud Practitioner course. You can complete the decision exercises on this page without an AWS account; optional labs require an authorized account and a cost-control plan. Explore AWS foundations.

01

Build an operations baseline before setting alarms

Inventory the workload, its owners, dependencies and normal behavior. Distinguish CloudWatch metrics from logs, CloudTrail activity and application traces. Choose a symptom the operator can act on, a time window and a notification destination. For a metric that appears only on errors, decide whether missing data means healthy operation; for a continuously emitted heartbeat, absence may indicate a failure.

Reviewable practice outputCreate a one-page signal map with each metric or log source, its owner, an actionable threshold, missing-data treatment and an expected responder. Record how you would test the notification without causing an incident.

AWS: alarm missing-data behavior
02

Investigate an incident from evidence, not guesses

Start with customer impact and the first observed change. Compare application and infrastructure signals over the same time window, then inspect relevant logs, deployment history and CloudTrail events. Separate a failed dependency from a failed caller. Escalate when the evidence indicates a wider service or account issue. Make a reversible change only after writing what improvement you expect to observe.

Reviewable practice outputDraft an incident timeline for a fictional latency spike: impact, hypothesis, two observations that might disprove it, a rollback trigger and the evidence needed to close the incident.

03

Keep capacity and spend visible during operations

Read utilization and service limits alongside customer-facing latency. Decide whether the right response is tuning, scaling, a quota request or a different workload schedule. Review autoscaling activity and network or storage cost drivers before changing capacity. An alarm about cost should lead to an investigation; it does not itself impose a spending cap.

Reviewable practice outputPrepare a capacity review with current demand, a scaling signal, the expected effect of one change and a way to verify both performance and cost after the change.

AWS: performance optimization objectives
04

Prove recovery instead of assuming a backup is enough

Define recovery time and acceptable data loss for the workload. Map them to backups, replication and availability choices; each protects against a different failure. Confirm the backup policy covers the right resource and retention period. Restore a selected recovery point in an isolated environment, validate application data and capture the measured recovery time before trusting the procedure.

Reviewable practice outputWrite a recovery checklist for a sample database, including the recovery-point selection, isolation boundary, validation query, owner, measured elapsed time and cleanup steps.

05

Make deployments repeatable and reconcile drift

Read CloudFormation templates as intended state. Review changes and dependencies before applying them, then compare actual resource configuration with the template after manual incident changes. Drift detection covers supported resources and specified properties; it does not prove every property is correct. Document whether an out-of-band change should be codified or reverted before the next deployment.

Reviewable practice outputPrepare a change record for a fictional security-group update: template change, review and approval evidence, safe rollout check, drift finding and a rollback decision.

AWS: detect CloudFormation stack drift
06

Operate with least privilege and compliance evidence

Identify the calling principal, its role trust, identity permissions, resource policy and any explicit deny before editing access. Separate workload credentials from human administration. Use CloudTrail and configuration evidence to answer what changed and who could perform the action, while respecting retention, account and Region coverage. Do not repair a narrowly scoped failure by attaching broad administrator access.

Reviewable practice outputCreate a redacted access trace for a sample failed S3 read, naming the principal, resource, required action, policy boundaries and one specific test that confirms the least-privilege fix.

AWS: SOA-C03 security and compliance objectives
07

Trace the network path and content-delivery layer

Follow a request through DNS, VPC route tables, security groups, network ACLs and the selected load-balancing or endpoint path. Inspect both the forward route and the return path. A healthy DNS response is not proof of connectivity, and an open network path is not data authorization. Use service-specific health and access logs to decide which layer is actually failing.

Reviewable practice outputDraw a private application-to-S3 path with its DNS result, endpoint route and identity decision. Mark the first observation that would separate routing from permission failures.

08

Turn the blueprint into an operator's revision plan

Combine the five domains in a small operational runbook: detect, diagnose, mitigate, restore and learn. For each practice-test mistake, record the missing observation or boundary rather than memorizing an answer letter. Revisit the official guide because AWS updates exam guides, and verify the exam code when booking.

Reviewable practice outputProduce a runbook and a domain-tagged mistake log. For three weak decisions, write the evidence that would make the correct action safer than the closest alternative.

PRACTISE THE DECISION

Four original, explained problems.

Work from the observations to the smallest defensible change, then check how you would verify the outcome. These are fictional learning scenarios, not customer incidents or recalled exam questions.

EXERCISE 1 · Monitoring

The dashboard is green while the heartbeat has stopped

A worker normally publishes a custom heartbeat metric every minute. After a deployment it stops publishing, but the alarm was configured to treat missing points as not breaching. Queue age is climbing. The team has not yet identified whether the worker or metric publishing failed.

Your taskWhich alarm and investigation decisions would avoid treating missing telemetry as proof of health?

Review the explained decision

Reasoned approach. For a continuously emitted heartbeat, investigate missing data as a potentially bad signal and choose alarm missing-data behavior consistent with that expectation. Correlate the stopped heartbeat with queue age, worker logs and deployment events before changing capacity or rolling back. Test the alarm behavior by withholding sample metric data in an authorized environment.

Why the shortcut fails. Lowering the heartbeat threshold cannot make absent data appear. Treating every sparse error-only metric as breaching would create false alarms, so missing-data policy must match the metric's expected publication pattern.

Check your work. Write the expected alarm state for a missed heartbeat and for an error-only metric with no errors. Record a responder and an escalation path for the queue-age signal.

EXERCISE 2 · Business continuity

A backup job succeeded, but can the application recover?

A team has nightly backups of a test database and a recovery target of two hours. Reports show successful backup jobs, but nobody has restored one or checked that the application can read the recovered data. A change window is available in a non-production account.

Your taskDesign a safe test that distinguishes backup success from recovery readiness.

Review the explained decision

Reasoned approach. Select a known recovery point, restore into an isolated test target, measure the elapsed time and run data and application validation checks. Capture the permissions, network path and configuration required to reconnect. Compare the result with the recovery-time and data-loss targets, then document cleanup and next actions.

Why the shortcut fails. A completed backup job proves that a recovery point was created, not that the application can use a restored database or meet its recovery objective. Do not overwrite the working database to test this.

Check your work. Record the chosen recovery point, the restored object's location, a non-sensitive validation query, the observed recovery time and whether the result actually met the target.

EXERCISE 3 · Automation

An emergency change differs from the stack template

During an approved incident, an operator adjusted a load-balancer-related configuration outside CloudFormation. Service recovered, but the next stack update might replace the manual setting. The team needs to understand current state before deployment.

Your taskWhat evidence and change decision are needed before updating the stack?

Review the explained decision

Reasoned approach. Run drift detection on supported resources and inspect the specific properties that differ. Compare the out-of-band change with the incident record and the approved desired state. Either update the template to represent an approved permanent change or plan a reviewed reversion. Preview the change set and keep a rollback decision before deployment.

Why the shortcut fails. Assuming every resource and every property is covered by drift detection creates false confidence. Redeploying the old template without reviewing the emergency change can undo the fix.

Check your work. Document expected versus actual values, which properties are in scope for drift detection, the chosen desired state and an observable post-deployment verification.

EXERCISE 4 · Networking

Private instances cannot download deployment artifacts

EC2 instances in private subnets read artifacts from an S3 bucket in the same Region. Requests time out after a route-table change. The instance role still has the required object permission, and an S3 gateway endpoint exists only on a different subnet's route table.

Your taskIdentify the network correction without making the bucket or instances public.

Review the explained decision

Reasoned approach. Associate the relevant private-subnet route table with the S3 gateway endpoint after confirming endpoint and bucket policies. Check that the request can use the endpoint route from the affected subnet. Keep identity authorization separate from network reachability, and verify access from an affected instance after the route change.

Why the shortcut fails. Adding IAM permissions does not repair a missing route. Opening the bucket publicly or putting the instances in a public subnet broadens exposure without addressing the private-path requirement.

Check your work. Show the affected subnet and route table, the endpoint association, the object-read policy boundary and an authorized read test that succeeds only on the intended path.

AWS: S3 gateway endpoints

Optional hands-on practice should use only authorized accounts, sample data and a clear cleanup plan. Check applicable service charges first. A budget alert is not a spending cap.
