Experienced solution architects who must justify system design to engineering, security, business owners and operations.

Before starting: Hands-on integration and evaluation experience is recommended. Foundations and Professional are separate credentials; Anthropic's FAQ states there is no formal Foundations prerequisite.

Six practical learning units

This original study sequence develops role-specific skills. It is not a reproduction of confidential exam content or a claim of complete blueprint coverage.

1. Translate discovery into acceptance criteria

Begin with the business decision, available evidence and the cost of error. Identify the process owner, affected users and constraints before choosing an architecture. Replace broad requests for an AI assistant with measurable tasks, exclusions and review requirements. Validate that an AI component is needed at all.

Try it: Scope an internal procurement assistant. Separate policy explanation, supplier comparison and purchase authorization into different responsibilities.

Check your work: The design includes measurable outcomes and explicitly excludes autonomous purchasing unless separately authorized.

2. Choose architecture using constraints

Compare deterministic workflows, retrieval-assisted responses and autonomous tool selection against the actual uncertainty of the task. More agent steps introduce additional latency and failure modes. Document why an architecture was chosen, when its assumptions stop holding and which alternatives were rejected.

Try it: Compare a fixed invoice-routing pipeline with a research assistant. Draw the retrieval, reasoning, approval and external-write boundaries for each.

Check your work: The routine routing process does not acquire open-ended autonomy without a demonstrated need.

3. Plan enterprise integration and operation

Map identity, data access, network boundaries, service dependencies and ownership. Budget for the complete workflow, including retrieval, retries, approvals and tool calls. Specify recovery when a dependency fails and define which outcomes can be safely deferred. A prototype's model latency is not an end-to-end service objective.

Try it: Create a latency budget and failure map for a customer-support copilot that depends on identity, case history and an order service.

Check your work: The design has a safe read-only fallback and named owners for dependency outages rather than presenting stale data as current.

4. Place safety controls at enforceable boundaries

Use layered controls before input processing, before tool execution and before publishing output. Separate model instructions from authorization. Map sensitive decisions to an accountable human and retain evidence of approvals. Where a mandatory safety dependency fails, define a safe state instead of assuming an unchecked action is acceptable.

Try it: Threat-model a supplier document containing instructions to export internal records. Identify the exact boundary that rejects the unauthorized export.

Check your work: Document text never expands the caller's permissions. The control remains effective even when model output is wrong.

5. Make evaluations a decision gate

Tie evaluation cases to acceptance criteria and harmful failure modes. Use production-representative distributions and measure important cohorts separately. Define thresholds, reviewers and rollback triggers before launching an experiment. A high average score cannot compensate for a critical access-control failure.

Try it: Write a release decision for a new model that improves speed but worsens unsupported answers on a high-risk customer segment.

Check your work: The critical regression blocks broad rollout; the decision records evidence and a targeted remediation plan.

6. Deliver a sustainable handover

A system is not operationally complete until the receiving team can change, monitor and recover it. Provide configuration ownership, runbooks, escalation paths and controlled rollout procedures. Train reviewers using realistic exceptions. Explain trade-offs to stakeholders in terms of risk, value and evidence rather than model novelty.

Try it: Run a tabletop incident in which a knowledge source changes and the assistant's answers become unreliable. Have the receiving team contain and recover the service using only the handover.

Check your work: The team can disable the affected workflow, restore a verified version and communicate impact without depending on the original architect.
