Learn the reasoning behind software-testing decisions, practise with concrete examples, and check your progress against the current Foundation Level syllabus. This guide connects the certification path, three original practice sets and official booking route without treating a practice score as a credential.

LEARN THE DECISION, NOT A MEMORIZED ANSWER
Build a testing habit you can use beyond the exam
Start with the risk and expected behavior
For each feature, ask what matters to the user, what can fail and how you would know. Read the corresponding official learning objectives, design a small set of tests, predict the result, and explain any mismatch. This keeps your revision grounded in a real testing decision rather than a glossary recital.
Use practice to diagnose gaps
Try a timed set after working through the six chapters. Review why each missed choice is wrong, revisit the applicable syllabus section, and create a fresh example of the same concept before attempting another set. These are not official question banks and cannot predict your result.
CURRENT FOUNDATION LEVEL SCOPE
Six connected CTFL study units
The unit sequence follows the six chapter areas of the official v4.0.1 syllabus. The explanations and exercises below are ITCertPath's own examples; use the official document for the complete learning objectives and glossary.
01
Testing fundamentals
Separate a test objective from a test activity. Learn why a test can reveal a defect without proving that no other defects exist, and practise writing a useful observation rather than merely saying a feature 'works'.
Try this
Take a password-reset requirement. List what must be checked, the evidence you would collect, and one limitation of your checks.
02
Testing across the development lifecycle
Connect test levels and test types to the risks they address. Distinguish a component check from an end-to-end user journey, and decide what should be retested after a change.
Try this
For a new payment method, map a unit check, an integration check, a system scenario and a focused regression check.
03
Static testing and reviews
Review requirements and other work products before running software. Identify ambiguity, missing acceptance criteria and conflicting assumptions, then give actionable feedback.
Try this
Review 'the search page should be fast'. Write two questions that would make the requirement testable before implementation.
04
Test analysis and design
Use equivalence partitioning and boundary values for input rules, decision tables for combinations, state transitions for workflows, and appropriate structural or experience-based techniques when context calls for them.
Try this
Given an allowed age range of 18–65 inclusive, identify valid and invalid partitions and a small boundary-focused set of ages with expected results.
05
Managing testing activities
Prioritize by product risk and available evidence. Draft a proportionate test plan, record execution status, and report a defect so another person can reproduce and investigate it.
Try this
A checkout release has limited test time. Rank card-charge errors, color contrast and a cosmetic label issue; explain the risk and what you would report as residual risk.
06
Test tools and automation
Choose a tool for the problem it solves rather than automating everything. Consider setup cost, maintainability, false confidence and the human review still needed for meaningful outcomes.
Try this
Select one repetitive regression check to automate. Specify its stable assertion, test data, owner and what a passing result cannot prove.

ONE DECISION WORKED THROUGH
From an age rule to useful boundary tests
The scenario
A registration form accepts ages from 18 through 65, inclusive, and rejects other numeric ages. First identify the valid partition (18–65) and two invalid partitions (below 18 and above 65). Then check the edges: 17, 18, 19 and 64, 65, 66. Record expected accept/reject outcomes before running the tests.
What the result does not tell you
Passing those six checks does not establish what happens for a blank value, text, a decimal or an impossible date of birth. Those are separate rules and risks to clarify. A good answer names the technique, states assumptions, and explains which behavior is still untested.

ISTQB certification roadmap
See which current Foundation, Advanced, Specialist and Expert pathways fit your role; confirm each track's own syllabus and entry conditions.
ISTQB controls the credential and publishes the exam structure. Formats for other ISTQB certifications can differ, so do not assume every track follows CTFL's 40-question pattern.
Version note: ISTQB retired the CTFL v3.1/2018 exam in 2024; older certificates remain valid. Do not buy a package advertised only for that retired exam without checking the current version.

CTFL preparation FAQs
Is this the current ISTQB Foundation Level version?
This independent study outline follows ISTQB's CTFL v4.0 certification page and its v4.0.1 syllabus download, reviewed on 23 October 2026. Confirm the syllabus tied to your appointment with your exam provider before you book.
Is the free practice test an official ISTQB exam?
No. ITCertPath's three 40-question timed sets are original, independent practice based on public syllabus topics. They are not live exams, official sample papers or a guarantee of a passing result.
Where can I buy or book the CTFL exam?
Use ISTQB's member-board or licensed exam-provider route for your country. Check the exact syllabus version, language, price, taxes, voucher validity and rescheduling terms with the seller before payment. ITCertPath does not claim to hold ISTQB exam voucher inventory.
