PMP Audit Process: Evidence, References and a Response Checklist

An audit is a request to verify information, not an invitation to rewrite your history. Work from the notification in your PMI account, keep a consistent evidence set and resolve missing information through the official process.

Start with the actual audit request

PMI’s current handbook describes a 90-day submission window and an estimated five to seven business days for a complete audit review. These are policy details to verify against your notification, not an ITCertPath turnaround promise. You cannot continue the certification process until the audit requirements are satisfied.

Save the notification and identify the deadline, requested records and submission mechanism. Use your official account rather than links sent by an unknown intermediary. Do not send a password, one-time code or payment to someone who claims they can bypass the audit.

Build an evidence checklist for each claim

The handbook identifies education documents, project-experience verification and training evidence among the records that may be requested. Match each requested item to the original application. A certificate with a different name, an unexplained date discrepancy or a reference unfamiliar with the entry needs attention before submission.

Use an index with the application entry, supporting item, person responsible and current status. Keep documents legible and complete. Do not add unrelated employer records simply to make the package larger; unnecessary personal and commercial information creates privacy risk without clarifying the claim.

Help references respond without influencing their answer

Tell a potential verifier that PMI may request confirmation and explain how they know your work. They should review the actual facts, not sign a description that you have changed to sound more senior. If they identify a discrepancy, address it honestly through the instructions PMI provides.

If a former manager is unavailable, ask PMI which alternative is acceptable. Do not invent a replacement contact or assume that any colleague can verify every project. Start early enough to account for leave, changed email addresses and records held by a former employer.

Submit, track and learn from the result

Before submitting, compare the evidence index with the request line by line. Keep a copy of the completed package and a record of the submission confirmation. Follow up through official support when instructions are unclear; repeated submissions through different channels can make your own tracking harder.

If an issue is identified, read the stated reason and applicable next steps. Application assistance can help organise a response but cannot approve evidence or guarantee a result. Continue studying at a sustainable pace while keeping any exam-booking decision aligned with your actual eligibility status.
