Appian Certified Analyst: practical study guide

A pathway for non-developer team members who plan and shape Appian projects. Prepare by turning business goals into clear processes, user stories and testable outcomes, then confirm the current exam details with Appian before booking.

START WITH THE ROLE

Who this pathway fits

Business analysts, product owners, project managers, UX practitioners and other members of an Appian delivery team.

Appian describes this as a non-developer pathway. The practice plan below is guidance, not a claimed eligibility requirement or official exam syllabus.

What to practise

  • Explain what a process should achieve before deciding how to automate it.
  • Map actors, decisions, handoffs, exceptions and measurable outcomes in a business workflow.
  • Write user stories and acceptance criteria that developers and testers can use.
  • Review a proposed Appian solution for usability, traceability and stakeholder fit.
ORIGINAL LEARNING OUTLINE

A practical preparation sequence

This sequence is an ITCertPath study suggestion, not a vendor exam blueprint or guaranteed timetable.

01

Understand the delivery context

Read Appian's current Analyst learning path and connect platform capabilities to a concrete business problem.

Try it: List the process goal, stakeholders, inputs, outputs and success measures for an employee onboarding request.
02

Model the process

Separate the happy path from approvals, rework, rejected requests and missing information.

Try it: Draw the onboarding flow, identify each handoff and write one exception path for an incomplete request.
03

Define testable requirements

Translate process steps into user stories, field rules, access needs and acceptance criteria.

Try it: Write five stories, including a measurable criterion for when an approver can return a request.
04

Review and revise

Check whether the proposed screens and notifications support each user role without adding needless steps.

Try it: Walk through the stories as a requester, approver and administrator; record missing decisions before handoff.
REAL WORK, NOT MEMORIZED ANSWERS

Employee onboarding discovery pack

A company wants to replace emailed onboarding forms with a tracked request and approval process.

  1. Interview the requester, hiring manager and HR administrator about the current handoffs.
  2. Create a current-state and proposed-state process map, including rejected and incomplete requests.
  3. Define the minimum data collected, who may view it, and when the request is complete.
  4. Write user stories and acceptance criteria, then hold a walkthrough with a developer and tester.

Review checkpoint: The pack is useful when another person can explain the process, identify each decision owner and test every stated outcome without guessing.
