PMP Eligibility Requirements 2026: Education, Experience and Training

Check eligibility before buying preparation or selecting an exam date. Your education determines the experience route; your project history supplies the evidence. A job title, a course certificate or a strong mock score does not replace the other requirements.

Match your education to the current route

The July 2026 outline lists the routes below. Project leadership experience must fall within the preceding ten years. Qualification equivalence matters: a certificate called ‘advanced’ does not automatically establish a bachelor-equivalent level. Confirm uncertain mappings with PMI.

Education routeNon-overlapping project leadership
Secondary qualification60 months
Recognised associate / eligible level-5 equivalent48 months
Bachelor’s or eligible level-6 equivalent / higher36 months
Qualifying GAC-accredited bachelor’s or postgraduate program24 months

Count calendar coverage, not the sum of project durations

Consider an illustrative project A from January through June and project B from April through September. Each project lasts six calendar months, but the combined period covers nine months, not twelve. April, May and June cannot be counted twice. Record the projects separately and use the calendar to identify the overlap.

Build a month-by-month timeline before drafting prose. Mark months when you actually led project work, not merely when your employer had a project running. Gaps are not something to hide: they tell you whether more relevant experience is needed. A full-time operational role with occasional project involvement requires particular care in describing what was project work.

Separate project work from routine operations

A recurring weekly service report describes continuing operations. Leading a defined initiative to redesign reporting, implement a new workflow and transition it to support describes a potential project. Explain its objective, boundaries, your responsibilities and outcome rather than relying on the word ‘project’ in the title.

For each entry, ask whether another person could verify what you have written. Keep a private evidence index: qualification, dates, training record and a reference familiar with your role. Do not upload confidential internal records to a public discussion or send them as part of an initial sales enquiry.

  • Identify the temporary objective and the resulting deliverable or change.
  • Distinguish your own leadership from work performed by the wider team.
  • Reconcile dates with records before submission.
  • Describe incomplete or cancelled work honestly rather than inventing a successful outcome.

Check the separate education requirement

PMI requires eligible project-management education, with an active CAPM route providing training-hour credit. See the contact-hours guide for the 35-hour requirement and the December 2026 live-provider change. Do not assume that a bundle of practice questions is qualifying instruction.

If one requirement is missing, plan for that gap. More mocks cannot create project experience. More experience does not automatically create a documented course record. Once your route is clear, prepare your application and choose a study schedule that fits your starting knowledge rather than the fastest advertised deadline.
