CAPM is a foundation credential. PMP validates substantial project-leadership experience. The right choice depends first on eligibility—not on which acronym sounds more senior.

Choose PMP when…

  • You meet a current PMI experience route.
  • You have led projects and can document your responsibilities and outcomes.
  • You want to validate leadership across predictive, agile and hybrid delivery.
  • You are prepared for a scenario-heavy professional exam.

Choose CAPM when…

  • You do not yet meet PMP’s project-leadership experience requirement.
  • You are moving into project coordination, analysis or junior delivery roles.
  • You want a structured foundation in project-management concepts.
  • You want a credential that can later support your PMP journey.

A simple decision rule

If you already meet PMP eligibility, compare PMP preparation options. If you do not, CAPM can provide a credible foundation while you build real project-leadership experience. Never claim experience you cannot document—PMI may select an application for audit.
