Current PMP exam format
The current exam uses multiple-choice and multiple-response questions, drag-and-drop items and interactive, scenario-based formats. Ten of the 180 questions are unscored pretest questions and are mixed into the exam.
2026 domain weights
The new outline gives substantially more weight to the Business Environment than the previous exam. Study should connect delivery decisions to organisational value, stakeholder outcomes, sustainability and the responsible use of technology.
PMI states that approximately 40% of items represent predictive approaches, while the remaining 60% is divided between adaptive/agile and hybrid approaches.
Eligibility routes
PMI currently provides four education-and-experience routes: five years with a secondary-school qualification, four years with an associate or vocational qualification, three years with a bachelor’s degree or higher, or two years with a qualifying PMI GAC degree. The experience must involve leading projects and fall within PMI’s applicable time window.
Candidates also need 35 hours of eligible project-management training unless an active CAPM certification satisfies that requirement. PMI announced additional restrictions for some live training routes beginning in late Q4 2026, so confirm your provider before enrolling.
How to prepare effectively
- Read the current Exam Content Outline before selecting study material.
- Map your weak areas across all three domains.
- Practise situational questions rather than memorising definitions.
- Review why each wrong option is wrong.
- Complete timed simulations and use the two-break rhythm.
- Schedule only when performance is stable across domains.
